Mileage history: compare the observations, not just the headline
Use dates, units and source context to distinguish a question worth investigating from an unsupported conclusion about clocking.

Create a dated sequence
A useful comparison needs three pieces of information: the observation date, the numerical reading and its unit. Keep the source alongside each item. Do not replace an unknown unit with an assumption simply to produce a smooth graph.
Our reports preserve the original units returned by the source. The browser tool asks you to choose one unit for both entries. If one entry is in kilometres and another is in miles, convert and check them outside the comparison before treating them as directly comparable.
Use an annualised rate for context only
The calculator divides the entered change by the days between readings and scales it to a year. This describes the observed interval. A high or low result does not identify the driver, explain the use pattern or verify the current reading.
A lower later entry is a reason to investigate. It is not, by itself, proof of deliberate tampering. Check the original documents, transcription, date and unit, then ask the seller for a clear explanation and supporting evidence.
Write down uncertainty instead of hiding it
When preparing a viewing, identify the exact gap or contradiction you want explained. A precise question about two dated entries is more useful than a general accusation. Keep explanations labelled as statements until corroborated.
A consistent sequence also has limits: it describes the observations you have, not every journey or instrument change. Add a physical inspection and supporting service evidence. The workspace does not invent missing readings or turn a calculated rate into a certified current odometer.
Primary sources & further reading
Check records, then inspect the vehicle.
A history check can add useful context. It cannot prove ownership, roadworthiness or that every accident has been recorded.
