WEHPICHECK / BUY WITH A CLEARER PICTURE

Check for recorded stolen-car markers before buying.

A stolen car check asks whether available sources return a recorded theft-related marker for the vehicle being searched. It is a useful part of buying research, but a registration result alone cannot establish that the vehicle in front of you has the right identity. Compare the report, paperwork and physical car before deciding.

What a recorded marker means

Read the exact wording and date of any theft-related finding. A current stolen marker and a historical stolen-and-recovered event are not interchangeable. Do not reduce the result to a single green or red label without reading its context and any limitations in the returned record.

Why the physical identity still matters

A registration can be copied onto another vehicle. Compare the VIN on the car with the documents and the details you have been given. Check that the model, colour and other identity information make sense together. An illustrative image on a lookup page is not an identity inspection.

Free checks and wider history searches

Basic vehicle information and MOT history help establish a starting point. They do not provide a complete stolen-vehicle search. Our package page describes the theft searches included in the selected paid report alongside finance and insurance-history searches. Available records and timing can vary.

If something does not match

Pause the transaction and investigate before paying a deposit or completing the purchase. Keep a record of the advert and the information supplied. If you suspect a vehicle or document is stolen, contact the police through an appropriate reporting channel rather than relying on a seller’s explanation to clear the concern.

Your questions, answered.

Can a stolen car check prove a seller owns the car?

No. A history search is not proof of ownership or a guarantee of the seller’s right to sell.

Does no stolen record mean the car cannot be cloned?

No. A registration search cannot replace checking the physical identity of the vehicle.
