WEHPICHECK / BUY WITH A CLEARER PICTURE

A used-car check that leads to better questions.

Before you buy a used car, organise the evidence in a sequence: identify it, check the relevant records, inspect it and resolve any contradictions. A vehicle history report is one part of that sequence. It is most valuable when you use the findings to ask specific questions instead of treating it as a buying decision.

Before arranging the viewing

Save the advert and ask for the registration, basic description and relevant documentation. Compare the available vehicle information and MOT history with the seller’s claims. Decide which wider searches you need for recorded finance, theft, write-offs or salvage rather than leaving them until after a deposit.

At the car

Compare the physical VIN and paperwork with the details you have collected. Check the current odometer against historical readings and ask about unusual gaps or changes. Look for evidence supporting repair and maintenance claims, particularly where a report finding points to an event that needs explanation.

Check the current condition separately

A history report does not inspect tyres, corrosion, warning lights, body repairs or mechanical condition. Arrange a suitable independent inspection and a lawful, appropriately insured test drive where relevant. An MOT pass is a dated test outcome, not a promise that no work will be needed.

Before completing the purchase

Resolve contradictory information in writing and keep your report, correspondence and agreed details together. Investigate finance or identity concerns using independent evidence. If important questions remain unanswered, pause the transaction rather than relying on pressure, presentation or a seller’s reassurance.

Your questions, answered.

Should I check the history before paying a deposit?

Research the relevant records and terms before committing money, especially if you already have questions about identity or finance.

Can a history report replace an inspection?

No. Recorded history and current physical condition require different checks.
