How to read MOT history without jumping to conclusions

Read the sequence of MOT outcomes and recorded mileage, then use it to plan questions about maintenance and present condition.

Start with the dates and outcomes

MOT history can show test dates, pass or fail outcomes and mileage recorded at testing. Start by putting those observations in order. A later pass is a useful event in the sequence, but it does not explain every repair that happened between visits.

Separate a test outcome from a seller statement. If an advert says work was completed after a failure, ask for the supporting repair evidence rather than assuming the next test documents all the work.

Read comments as prompts for questions

Repeated comments deserve a place on your viewing checklist. Group observations by component, such as tyres, brakes or corrosion, and ask how each was addressed. Do not turn a list of advisories into a remote diagnosis of the vehicle today.

Our report preserves dated observations where returned. If a section is unavailable, use the official MOT service to continue your research. The private report keeps the original result; a later manual check is a separate piece of evidence.

Compare readings carefully

Check dates and units before comparing odometer observations. A missing unit is an uncertainty, not permission to assume miles. Our mileage calculator only compares the two readings you enter using the same unit; it does not verify either reading.

Keep the official record and supporting invoices together. Ask an inspector about current condition even where the historical sequence appears consistent. The record is a research aid, not a warranty or prediction of the next test.

Check records, then inspect the vehicle.

A history check can add useful context. It cannot prove ownership, roadworthiness or that every accident has been recorded.
