Budget for the first year of car ownership

Separate the purchase price from the costs that arrive after collecting the keys.

Build the full list

Start with the vehicle price and add travel, inspections, insurance, tax, expected servicing and any identified repair work. If finance is involved, understand the actual agreement rather than counting only an advertised monthly payment. Keep a sensible allowance for unexpected work.

Use evidence for estimates

Request insurance quotations for your circumstances and ask a workshop about known repair concerns. Review service recommendations and tyre condition. A vehicle-history valuation is an indication from its stated source and basis, not a guarantee of the car’s condition or your eventual selling price.

Track spending after purchase

Keep fuel or charging, service and repair receipts. A simple monthly log can reveal costs missed in the original plan. Use our local buying-budget calculator to add figures you enter; it does not fetch quotes or predict future repairs.

Your checklist

  • Include insurance, tax and servicing
  • Price identified work before purchase
  • Check actual finance terms if relevant
  • Allow for unexpected repairs
  • Keep receipts for later review
