Your first used-car checklist
A practical sequence for checking a car, its paperwork and the costs before committing.
Before you travel
Ask for the registration, mileage and the seller’s description of the condition. Review the MOT record for repeated advisories or gaps, then prepare questions rather than assuming a clean pass explains the whole vehicle. Confirm that the person selling can explain the car’s history and show the relevant documents.
At the vehicle
Compare the registration and vehicle identification details with the paperwork. Inspect the car in useful daylight, allow time for a proper viewing and consider an independent inspection. Ask how service work was recorded and whether evidence supports the claims. A report and an inspection answer different questions.
Before you pay
List the purchase price, insurance, tax, immediate repairs and travel costs. Check the identity and payment arrangements of the seller. Do not feel pressured into paying because a listing or report looks polished. Keep the written description, agreed price and receipt.
