Prepare for an MOT without guessing
Simple preparation, useful records and questions to take to the testing station.
Check the record
Find the current recorded expiry date and read the previous test, including advisories. An advisory is a reason to check condition, not a fixed repair quote or a prediction of the next result. Keep the date somewhere you will see it and arrange a test in good time.
Basic checks first
Check that lamps work, glass is clear, washers have appropriate fluid and number plates are readable. Look for visible tyre damage and use the vehicle handbook for the correct tyre-pressure guidance. Do not attempt repairs you are not competent to carry out. A garage can check concerns before the test.
After the appointment
Keep the result and any repair invoices. Read the actual outcome and applicable instructions rather than assuming the previous expiry settles whether a vehicle may be driven. A current MOT does not remove the duty to keep a vehicle safe between tests.
Your checklist
- Confirm the recorded expiry
- Read previous advisories
- Check lights, washers and readable plates
- Arrange competent checks for faults
- Keep the result and repair evidence
